The theme for House of Cards is remarkable. Curiously, I find myself sitting through it each episode, which is why I waspleased to come across this video discussing its creation.
I am not a musician. I know how to read music and can play a couple of instruments, but that brings me nowhere near to the level of Jeff Beal’s integration with his craft. In collaboration with Fincher, the show’s creator, Beal draws the main character into his mind where it co-mingles with inspiration living inside him. A little refining of the idea and the music easily flows out from his fingers onto the piano. His artistry is not only skillful, but a perfect example of the creative process. He has an instinctual understanding of how to transform the sketch of a character and storyline into a full and representative piece.
This level of mastery is not acquired solely through practice, though that is how it starts. It takes full devotion to push past that into this other realm, living art.
