I stumbled upon The Director (trailer above), and fell completely in love with its heroine. Afterwards, I sought out other personality-driven fashion docs and discovered The September Issue, and then Dior and I. In these documentaries Gucci, Vogue, and Dior are faced with completing important projects, lead by quiet, thoughtful visionaries who are devoted to their craft. Gucci’s creative director Frida Giannini is fresh off a dark and beautiful, fall/winter collection and is now preparing for spring. Vogue’s editor Anna Wintour is setting up for the fashion industry “new year” with the famous fall issue, and the new-to-Dior artistic director Raf Simons designs his first ever couture collection.
Each of these creators rely on a team of talented professionals to assist them in realizing their visions, and each has specific processes through which they achieve their final products. From inspiration flows discussion, analysis and the fleshing-out of initial ideas. The team’s communication and exchange of perspectives ensures a creative mix, with negotiation and reality checks moving the project forward. Along with the doubt and fear that comes with creation, additional clarification and refining moves the process along. The collections become clearer, fuller, and finally – complete.
The projects culminate in successful and elaborate presentations where there are noticeable feelings of relief followed by elation. Each team sees the tangible results of their adventure together, and there is appreciation, celebration, and champagne. The process will begin again, but not today.
It surprised me how much I, a fashion null, related to the houses and their processes of creation, but it is because these three films illustrate clearly what makes teamwork so fulfilling. The group pulls its diverse participants together to create something that is dear to them, with each member offering talents that are unique and original. By some sort of alchemy it works, and the world becomes the lucky recipient of the team’s labor – a collection, a magazine, an event, a service that influences culture and society. These are benefits, provided through the collaborative work of people.
